This one holds a lot of summers. Palm Cove jetty was a much loved local spot when the kids were young, hours spent with fishing lines dangling off the edge, feet swinging above the water, the tide rising and falling around the pylons while the afternoon stretched on the way it only does when you're a kid on school holidays.
I've painted three boys fishing and a girl walking past with her net, all caught in that particular kind of summer stillness, where nothing much is happening, and somehow everything about summer is happening at once. The light does most of the work here: it hits a shoulder, pools in a shadow under a hat brim, breaks apart in the reflections below bare feet in the water.
I didn't paint the figures with precise detail, that's deliberate. I wanted the feeling of being there, not a photograph of it.
