There are streets in the white villages of Andalucía that most visitors never find.

You have to be staying there — really staying, not passing through — to stumble down an alley like this one. Whitewashed walls catching the afternoon light. Bougainvillea and red geraniums tumbling from ledges and blue pots. Globe lights strung between buildings, waiting for evening. And at the end of it all, just a glimpse of sea.

I photographed this street in the village in Spain where I have a home. I've walked it countless times. It never gets ordinary.

When I painted it I was trying to capture that particular quality of Mediterranean light — the way it makes everything feel suspended, unhurried, slightly unreal. The colourful doors. The vines. The sea just visible at the end of the alley, as if the whole street is pointing you toward it.

Las Luces — The Lights. Named for the globe lights strung overhead that transform the street at dusk into something magical.
