Some paintings begin with a place. This one began with a birthday.

We took our grandson to Nassau for his 21st. A gift, yes - but also an education. Because the Bahamas has a way of re-calibrating you.

The people are warm in a way that has nothing to do with the weather. The colours they surround themselves in their cobalt shutters, yellow walls, red rooftops against impossible green, are not just decorative choices. They're a way of living. A declaration.

The houses aren't perfect. The boats are weathered. The sand paths are uneven. And none of it matters because the water is right there and nobody is in a hurry to be anywhere else.

I painted this from memory. I wanted to hold onto that feeling. Life moving at the pace of the tide.
